Do you ever make New Year’s resolutions?
No, it sets me up for failure, but I try to make general resolutions all the time. I set an intention for something then take steps to manifest it.
What are you resolving to do at the moment?
To spend more time with my child. I love working but I’m trying to be more selective about where I shoot. Once she starts school, I don’t want to start dragging her around the planet. The last 20 films I did didn’t shoot in America. I love London but it’s too far for my little lady to travel.
How has fatherhood changed you?
It’s given me clarity. It’s changed nothing apart from going from selfishness — with my career being the most important thing — to now thinking about how to serve my child first. So I’ve gone from selfishness to selflessness.
Doesn’t doing the Avengers films take you away from your daughter?
We’ve shot in London but it’s hard for all of us to be away from our families so we’re doing the next two back-to-back in Atlanta.
There are petitions for a Black Widow solo film but there doesn’t seem to be any for Hawkeye to get his own…
I always thought it would make sense early on to do a Hawkeye/Widow movie because they’re quite similar — they don’t have powers, have high skill sets, and have history together, but I don’t think there are any discussions about that happening. I’d love to do it though.
Which Avengers do you see the most socially?
Working with the cast is the highlight of it. We’ve become great friends. I see Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson quite a lot. Chris Hemsworth has been so busy I haven’t hung out with him for a while and Elizabeth Olsen is a neighbour, so I see her quite often.
Why are you doing a BT advert?
A couple of buddies of mine, Alec Baldwin and Ryan Reynolds, did them and said they were funny adverts and I liked the concept they sent me.
What’s the worst injury you’ve sustained while making a film?
I injured my ankle doing The Hurt Locker. I was carrying a dead body down some stairs, and couldn’t see where I was going. They had to stop production for a few days. I was doing 30ft jumps off roofs with no problems but I injured myself walking down some stairs.
I’ve been doing music for years but I haven’t released anything yet. That was my ambition before I became an actor. I’ve started recording more seriously recently and I might put it out online.
What sort of music?
I’ve been inspired by people like Adele, Amy Winehouse, Sia, Kings Of Leon, Bruno Mars — I like his pop sensibility.
Why have you started writing and recording seriously recently?
I was thinking how do I scratch that creative itch as an artist but also stay with my child? I have a studio at home so I can write and record. I posted a picture on Instagram of my big piano and a baby piano next to it — and that’s my approach to it. I can write songs, maybe I don’t even have to perform them, maybe I can give them to someone else, but it lets me spend time with my child.
When are you doing gigs?
I want to spend some time working out what I want to include on an album. Then I have to do some films, then I’ll think about doing gigs. I’ve done some gigs but they’ve generally been singing with my friends when they do gigs. I want to start by doing them in small venues in London, New York and LA.
Are you nervous about it?
Music is tricky because it’s a personal thing. I’ll be up there exposed. That’s a difficult thing for me to reveal to people especially as I’m well-known. So I’m going to be selective about how I put something out. When I’m in a movie, I’m playing a character. With music it’s just me playing a piano. That’s why I’m being particular about it, but I’ve been having fun.
